What is the difference between Power BI Dataset, a Report, workbooks, dataflow, and a Dashboard?
- These are major building blocks that are integrated into workspaces, and are created in capacities. Capacities are a set of resources like storage, processor, and memory that are used to host and deliver your Power BI content. Capacities are either shared or dedicated.
Dataflow: A dataflow is used to unify data from disparate sources, they are optional and are used in complex projects. Dataflows are created only in workspaces and are stored as entities in Common Data Model (CDM). - Dataset: This is a collection of data that you import or connect to. Datasets can be part of workspaces or single workspace. One dataset can be shared over reports, dashboards and workspaces.
- Report: One or more pages of visualization (visual) like charts, graphs, and treemap are called MS Power BI Reports. Every report has two interactive view: Reading view and Editing View. In a workspace the associated report is listed under Content tab.
- Dashboards: This is a single canvas that can contain zero or more tiles, and widgets. A dashboard is associated with a workspace and helps to share visualizations from different datasets, reports, and tools.
- Workbooks: This is quite similar to dataset. There are 2 options for the data in the Excel sheet to be incorporated to Power BI: a) Import the data, then dataset is created, b) Upload the Excel file, then workbook is created.
What is Power Query?
Power Query is a data transformation and preparation engine. It has a graphical interface for getting data from sources and an Editor interface for applying the transformations. Power Query is an extract (E), transform (T), and load (L) data tool that helps to shape, clean, and transform data without the knowledge of coding.
What is DAX? Why is it used in Power BI?
